I consider making a magic sheet the best way to learn your plot prior to programming. As you can see in my magic sheet for Straight White Men, the numbering scheme ties each system together. A well made magic sheet will contain all the information you need and hopefully nothing extraneous. I always include a blank area on my magic sheets, so that when I have them printed and laminated, I am able to take notes in dry-erase marker.
